Collaborative Research for a Stronger ASEAN.

ABOUT THE ASEAN RESEARCH PROGRAM

The Program is part of the U.S. Scholar Program administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). It aims to open opportunities for American scholars and researchers to conduct collaborative research in the area of specialization on an issue of priority to ASEAN or to the U.S.-ASEAN relationship in two or three ASEAN countries.

Project statement must include a detailed description of proposed research, including justification for each country to be visited, duration and dates in each country, host institutions and planned site(s) to be visited. Affiliations with universities, think tanks, nongovernmental organizations and research centers in the selected host countries may be considered.

PROSPECTIVE SCHOLARS

The Fulbright ASEAN Research Program welcomes scholars at all career stages, and a Ph.D. is not required. Early Career Academics with up to seven years of experience, Mid-Career Academics with more than seven and fewer than thirteen years, and Senior Academics with over thirteen years of experience are all encouraged to apply and contribute to impactful, collaborative research across the ASEAN region.

Award activity must be undertaken in a single period of residence abroad. Applicants may propose travel to each country no more than once.

FIELDS

Applications are sought in all appropriate disciplines, but applications in the following disciplines are preferred:

Area Studies (non- U.S.), Communications, Economics, Education, Environmental Sciences, History (non- U.S.), Law, Political Science, Public Administration, Public Health

Applications in the following specializations are particularly sought: ASEAN studies, comparative politics, dispute settlement and negotiation, economic integration and trade policy, educational policy (including technical and vocational education), environmental science/studies, international law, international relations, marine conservation, public health, public policy, regional security, and wildlife trafficking.

Conduct collaborative research within your area of specialization on issues of priority to ASEAN or the U.S.–ASEAN relationship, across two to three ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, or Vietnam.

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary research or teaching activities‎.
